Nearly Half of Small Business Owners Miss Christmas

Almost half (49%) of the UK’s small business owners worked on Christmas Day last year, according to Zurich’s latest SME Risk Index, with 32% working across email and another 18% actually going into the office. The research indicated the challenges of achieving work/life balance with a further 9% having admitted to missing their child’s naivety play and 13% having missed the Christmas party. Overall, business owners are missing out on important time off. 14% of entrepreneurs surveyed were still yet to take annual leave in 2015 while 18% had not had more than 10 days off in the year. One in five small and mid-sized business entrepreneurs will have no break during the holidays Research has revealed the majority (76%) of small business owners resolve to work throughout the holidays with 17% planning to take no time off at all. The findings, which come from a survey of 500 small and mid-sized firms, found that over half of the respondents plan to work at least three hours a day with 15% stating they will work more than half a day. Younger business owners seem better at balancing work and home life, with just 17% feeling they need to improve it compared to 42% of business owners aged 55 and over. Just as many small businesses are getting ready to wind-down for the Christmas period spare a thought for the 10% of entrepreneurs who plan to work on Christmas Day. According to new research by UK Business Forums around 1 in 10 British entrepreneurs will be skipping the Queen’s speech and repeats of James Bond to roll their sleeves up and run their business. And even those business owners who do sit down to eat their Christmas dinner – about a third admitted that they are likely to be checking their company email or do some other business-related activities during Christmas Day.
