How much should I be spending on advertising per year?

How much you spend on advertising should be addressed as part of your marketing planning. There are no hard and fast guidelines – individual circumstances dictate the answer. Much depends on factors such as:

  • what your message is
  • who the target audience is
  • how much you are using other communications media

You may decide to allocate a budget that is a percentage of the previous year’s sales or profit, or simply increase last year’s advertising spend. Whatever budget you decide upon, the effect of your advertising should be monitored to ensure that it is working.
