Storm Brews Over Lazy Brits Slur

Details of a new book written by 5 Conservative MPs have been leaked to the press by the Evening Standard. The book Britannia Unchained: Global Lessons for Growth and Prosperity is due for publication in September but some extracts were printed ahead of time in The Evening Standard.

In the book the five Tories, Kwasi Kwarteng, MP for Spelthorne, Surrey, Priti Patel, MP for Witham in Essex, Dominic Raab, another Surrey MP (Esher & Walton), Chris Skidmore, MP for Kingswood, Bristol, and Elizabeth Truss, the Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk set out what the Evening Standard has called a "new blueprint for the Conservatives".

The five MPs, of what is being called the "new right", have apparently branded Brits as "the worst idlers" in the world and that the country should not look to Europe for its work ethic but to Asia instead.

The nations of South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong have been singled out as exemplars of hard work and the "young guns" have said the country should follow their lead or the UK will see itself slipping down the industrial league tables and standards of living will follow suit.

In the book they 5 are quoted as saying of the British workforce:

“Once they enter the workplace, the British are among the worst idlers in the world. We work among the lowest hours, we retire early and our productivity is poor.”

The Labour party have reacted with dismay at the leaked comments with Shadow Business Secretary, Chuka Umuna, saying to The Guardian:

“Arguing that working Britons are ‘the worst idlers in the world’ is deeply insulting. People who work hard, play by the rules and pay their taxes shouldn’t have to put up with Tory MPs calling them lazy.“

The book is due to be published on the 13th September, just before the Conservative Party Conference 2012 (7th – 10th October).
