The awards are free to enter, but entrants must have at least two full–time employees, be based in the UK and be able to demonstrate commercial success.

Small firms are eligible to enter any of the following award categories:

  • international trade
  • innovation
  • sustainable development.

Winners are entitled to display the Queen’s Award emblem on their stationery, advertising, goods and promotional material for five years. They can also fly the Queen’s Award flag at their main premises. Stephen Brice, secretary to the Queen’s Awards office said

“The Queen’s Award for Enterprise is perceived by 55% of winners as the single most valuable business award, the ultimate accolade,”

“But it’s more than just something to feel proud about; the benefits are tangible and real, such as a higher profile in home markets or increased recognition overseas, an increase in sales — as much as 60% improvement as a direct result of gaining the Award has been reported by one previous winner — and many feel it gives them a definite edge over their business rivals,” he added.

“Many successful businesses say their application took under ten hours to complete — a small investment for such high returns,” said Brice.

The awards are made by the Queen, on the advice of the Prime Minister, who is assisted by an advisory committee that includes representatives of government, industry and commerce, and trade unions.

Tacktick, a company which develops wireless solar–powered marine instruments, won a Queen’s Award for innovation in 2007. Clive Johnson, Tacktick joint managing director, said:

“The morale boost for the staff is one of the most single important benefits, especially for a small company like ours.”

Winners of the awards will be announced on 21 April 2009 — the Queen’s birthday.
