Guidance Clarifies Interns’ Pay Rights

Businesses which offer work experience placements and internships can access advice on their payment obligations, following the publication of updated guidance from Business Link. The National Minimum Wage (NMW) guide clarifies when work experience staff and interns are entitled to be paid. The guidance also includes a worker checklist for employers to check who should get the NMW. Entitlement to the National Minimum Wage does not depend on the job title, but whether the arrangement the intern or work experience person has with an organisation makes them a ‘worker’ for NMW purposes. EU work experience for Young Entrepreneurs

> A new scheme designed to give aspiring entrepreneurs work experience in Europe has been launched by the European Commission. Open to entrepreneurs who are either planning their own business startup, or those who have been running their own venture for less than three years, the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs programme aims to equip participants with business skills by spending time working in an EU country. Possible activities available under the scheme include shadowing an experienced entrepreneur, developing new business opportunities for the host entrepreneur’s company, working on branding or sales, or assisting on specific projects in a designated firm.
