Retail Apprenticeships Hit Record Levels

Theo Paphitis joins Skillsmart Retail to call for more retailers to take up the programme during Apprenticeship Week 2010. Retail Apprenticeships rose by nearly a third to reach record levels last year, Skillsmart Retail announced today. Figures released by the Sector Skills Council revealed that 5,900 Retail Apprenticeships were awarded in England in the academic year of 2008/9 – up 31% from 4,500 in 2007/8. The news comes in the run-up to Apprenticeship Week; a seven day celebration of Apprentices running from Monday 1st February to Friday 5th February 2010. Firms apply for Green Loans

Dragons’ Den investor Theo Paphitis has urged small businesses to reduce their carbon footprint with the help of an interest–free ‘green’ loan from the Carbon Trust. A £31 million funding pot is available under the Carbon Trust’s Energy Efficiency Loan scheme. Eligible firms can borrow between £5,000 and £200,000 for new or replacement equipment that is more energy–efficient. Qualifying businesses must have fewer than 250 employees, 12 months’ trading history and a good credit rating. The size of the loan available will depend on the energy–related cost savings from the investment. Loans do not require security and must be paid back over four years. Get a BA in Enterprise Development

Would–be entrepreneurs can learn the skills they need to set up and run a business, following the launch of the UK’s first degree course in entrepreneurship. Students that take the three–year BA (Hons) in Enterprise Development, launched by Huddersfield University, will research, launch and run a business — learning key skills, such as business finance and market research as they go. The first year on the course will be spent identifying and screening business ideas to find an opportunity worth pursuing.
