Workers See Social Networking Risk to Personal and Corporate Security

One in six (17%) UK employees consider social networking such as Facebook and LinkedIn a major risk to corporate security, according to new research from global risk consultancy Protiviti. The research also found that three in ten (28%) believe that social networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn pose a real risk to their own personal security. The use of social networking within UK businesses has soared in recent times, with employees using Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter for marketing and other processes, including recruitment. Social networking is entering a new phase and is increasingly being taken seriously as an aid to learning, according to a new survey by SkillSoft. Whereas in 2010, social networking in the workplace was mainly used for marketing/PR and brand awareness purposes, this year, a significant 73% said they were using it to share information between colleagues, customers and clients. LinkedIn Network Extends with Twitter

Small-business owners using social networking websites LinkedIn and Twitter can reach a greater number of contacts in one go following the launch of a new application. The new Tweets tool allows LinkedIn users to automatically share their LinkedIn status updates with their followers on Twitter. Status updates are short sentences that users enter into their profiles to describe what they are doing, ask questions or share information. Both LinkedIn and Twitter are free to use. Twitter users can also select status updates, known as Tweets, to share with their LinkedIn contacts by adding the hash symbol to the end of the update, and it will instantly appear on their LinkedIn profile. More Firms should use Social Media to Recruit

Three quarters of employers are missing out on potential job candidates by failing to use social networking sites to recruit staff, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The DWP survey of 200 employers, carried out in association with recruitment firm Harvey Nash, found fewer than 25% of businesses regularly used websites such as LinkedIn and Facebook as part of their recruitment process. However, the poll suggested that firms were waking up to the growing relevance of social media for sourcing new skills.
