Work experience award open for entries

Small firms offering rewarding work experience to students are being invited to compete for a national award. The National Council for Work Experience (NCWE) Awards recognise businesses that provide undergraduates with structured work placements to help students develop the skills that make them employable. Two of the eleven award categories are aimed specifically at small and medium–sized enterprises – one is for firms with fewer than ten employees and one for firms with between ten and 250 employees. Small firms will also be eligible to enter the award for businesses which have started placement schemes within the last two years or which take on international students. Tax Relief for Research and Development

Relief is available on Research and Development expenditure, which means that a company can claim enhanced relief on qualifying costs against its profits. To qualify as Research and Development (R&D), an activity must be treated as R&D under generally accepted accounting practice, and fall within any guidelines issued by the Treasury. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has issued guidelines on what it considers is treated as R&D for accounting purposes. What reliefs are available?
