Innovative science and technology firms only have until 16 September to enter the Government-backed iawards, to be in with a chance of winning publicity and international trading support. Applicants can choose from 13 categories to enter, including energy and environment, digital communications, best collaboration, the next big thing and best technology start-up. Category winners will then go head-to-head for the iaward of the year. The awards are open to UK-registered firms of any size that have launched ground-breaking projects since 1 July 2007. Free guide offers energy saving tips

Small firms can get advice on how to cut their energy costs, following the launch of a free guide from Business Link. The ‘Save money by using energy more efficiently’ guide helps businesses identify areas where they can improve their energy efficiency so they can cut their bills and reduce their carbon emissions. Business Link sustainability adviser Erica Russell said: “Businesses should take the time to have a look at the guide to see the really simple and easy ways to cut your energy bills, such as ensuring that all your staff switch off their equipment when the building is empty,”. Russell highlighted a case where a small manufacturing firm in Hampshire reduced its annual energy bill by £6,000 simply by turning off all their equipment at the end of the day... »

Small Business gets Raw Deal on Energy

Small Businesses are getting a raw deal on their electricity according to new findings from energywatch, the gas & electric energy watchdog. Energywatch receives around 2,000 calls a month from small businesses and the rate has increased by 22% since last year. 90% of the calls received by energywatch are complaints with billing (61%), problems with transfer to a new supplier (24%), and issues with the way in which a contract has been sold (6%) One particular problem small businesses have is lacking the ability to be able to compare tariffs between energy suppliers as the information is often not forthcoming.
