41% of All Ransomware Attacks Aimed at Small Businesses
Small firms are not prepared for cyber security hacks with 47% of attacks spreading to more than 20 individuals within a company
41% of all ransomware attacks in the last year were targeted at small businesses, according to a report by Intermedia.
The 2016 Crypto-Ransomware report found, that of smaller enterprises that had fallen victim to cyber security hacks, 29% had between 10 and 99 employees while 12% only had between one and nine.
More worryingly, these cyber attacks were not just limited to one person with 47% of viruses spreading to more than 20 individuals within a small business.
The effects of ransomware on small businesses can be severe – with operations often brought to a standstill for a minimum of two days.
This has obvious financial implications as small and medium enterprises need to stay running in order to be competitive.
The report comes just months after it was revealed over a third of UK small businesses didn’t believe they were at risk of cyber-crime.
Richard Walters, senior vice president of security products at Intermedia, said:
“In the age of ransomware, what matters is how quickly employees are able to get back to work. Traditional backup and file sharing solutions are increasingly inadequate when it comes to addressing this growing concern, putting businesses at risk.”
