Enterprise Among the Over 55s
Small Business News – 20th February 2009
Business Link’s latest Hot Topic report, Enterprise among the over 55s, focuses on business owners and managers aged 55 and over. The Regional Economic Strategy recognises the contribution these people can make to the productivity of the economy especially as the population ages.
The report found that:
- Owners and managers aged over 55 account for almost a third (30%) of SMEs in the region.
- The majority (68%) of 55+ businesses have been trading for more than 10 years.
- For 53% of this age group using or keeping up with technology can be particularly challenging.
- Businesses led by 55+ entrepreneurs that have been operating for less than 10 years, are more likely to have experienced, and to expect growth, than companies that have been running for more than 10 years.
Business Link supports 55+ entrepreneurs through its core services for established businesses, its start up workshops and the Enterprise Gateways.
