Orange Business Award Winners
The National Business Awards 2008, sponsored by Orange, took place last night, Tuesday 18th November.
Winners of all 18 categories received their awards at a glittering gala dinner and ceremony, hosted by Andrew Marr and attended by Peter Mandelson, the Secretary of State for Business, at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.
Recognising and rewarding excellence, innovation and success, 2008’s campaign has been the hardest fought to date and has a total entry of £1,261bn, profit of £84bn and 4.5 million people on the payroll. Uniquely open to organisations of all sizes and from any industry sector – public or private – the best of British businesses are able to showcase their achievements and benchmark their successes against firms and bodies of all types.

The Health Work & Wellbeing Award for Small Business
Winner: Marshalls, Halifax, West Yorkshire
Marshalls West Lane is a £30M turnover, 80 acre manufacturing site employing 248 people producing over 7.5 Million flagstones in 2007.
Stone quarrying commenced at West Lane ‘Grange Quarry’ 127 years ago and the manufacturing works is now the largest concrete products manufacturing centre within Marshalls plc. West Lane manufacture a broad range of landscaping solutions including paving stones, walling blocks, edgings, drainage and decorative landscape products.
The Better Regulation Award
Winner: Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), London
The job of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is to regulate the medicines and devices industry to ensure their products work and are acceptably safe. The Better Regulation of Medicines Initiative (BROMI) is a collaboration of industry, government and health professionals, led by the MHRA.
The Chartered Management Institute Customer Focus Award
Winner: Rackspace, London
Rackspace is the world’s leader in hosting and the most highly recommended hosting. With the highest levels of customer satisfaction.
Founded in 1998, Rackspace supplies the necessary superstructure – web, application and database servers, network devices, bandwidth and managed services – needed to run any outsourced hosting solution.
The bigmouthmedia Marketing Strategy of the Year Award
Winner: DVLA, London
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is an executive agency within the Department for Transport, operating as a Trading Fund since April 2004.
DVLA was set up to underpin road safety and general law enforcement by maintaining central accurate registers of drivers and vehicles, and collecting Vehicle Excise Duty.
The ICAEW Corporate Responsibility Award
Winner: Brakes Group, Ashford, Kent
Founded in 1958, Brakes Group serves the UK and French foodservice sectors. Providing product and business solutions for the foodservice customer. The 3i Growth Strategy of the Year Award
Winner: Ashtead Plant Hire (A-Plant), Warrington, Cheshire

The Tenon Entrepreneurial Spirit Award
Winner: McLaren Construction, Brentwood, Essex
McLaren Construction specialises in the execution of design and build projects in the construction industry. Sector experience covers individual projects upto £40m value in the Commercial/Industrial, Retail, Leisure, Hotel and Education sector.
The Company operates nationally with Headquarters based in Brentwood, Essex, complemented with Regional Offices in Winchester, Birmingham and Leeds.
The Health, Work & Wellbeing Award
Winner: Grimsby Institute of Further & Higher Educatio, Grimsby
The Institute is a large provider of education, training and consultancy services to about 18,000 further education and 1800 undergraduate students pa as well as to many UK and overseas organisations. We operate in 17 sites in North East Lincolnshire, an area of social and economic deprivation.
The Orange Best Use of Technology in Business Award
Winner: CACI, Middlesex
The Care Provider division of CACI has built a reputation for designing, building and implementing integrated business management and mobile working systems in both the public and private sectors. It has partnered with a number of organisations over 20 years to deliver software solutions that meet specific individual business needs.
The City & Guilds Employer of the Year Award
Winner: beCogent, Airdrie
beCogent is a provider of innovative customer communication solutions operating within the service industry and providing outsourced services to clients across a diverse range of industries. These include the Retail, Finance & Banking, Technology and Telecommunications sectors.
The Badenoch & Clark Business of the Year
Winner: Hallin Marine Subsea International, Aberdeen
Hallin Marine Subsea International Plc is a global service provider and specialist manufacturer to the oil, gas and nuclear industries. It listed on AIM in April 2005 and has three divisions: West, based in Aberdeen; East and Manufacturing, both in Singapore. There are smaller offices in Perth, Jakarta and Houston.
The Credit Suisse Entrepreneur of the Year Award
Winner: Duncan Goose – Global Ethics (One Water), London
One water is an ethical bottled water brand. 100% of One water’s profits fund PlayPump® water systems in Africa. The PlayPump® system uses roundabouts as water pumps – when children play on the roundabout they provide a free, clean and sustainable water supply for the whole community.
The Regus Small to Medium Sized business of the Year
Winner: Pasta King (UK), Newton Abbot, Devon
A key foodservice supplier for schools, leisure centres and workplace canteens providing balanced, nutritional meals that are both easy to prepare and extremely profitable. The IMechE Business Innovation of the Year Award
