Obituary: Anita Roddick
One of the UK’s most successful entrepreneurs, Dame Anita Roddick, has died at the age of 64. She died at 6:30pm on Monday 10th September from a brain haemorrhage.
Dame Roddick started The Body Shop from humble beginnings in 1976 as a single store near Brighton selling just 15 home-made products. Her entrepreneurial skills turned The Body Shop from a small business into a global brand and multinational success story, employing staff in more than 2,000 branches in over 50 countries.
From it’s stock flotation in April 1984 at just 95p a share, The Body Shop grew to become an extremely successful business, eventually being bought in a takeover by French cosmetics company L’Oreal for £652.3 million in March 2006.
For her achievements Anita Roddick received numerous awards including 1984 Business Woman of the Year, Business Ethics & Business Leadership awards and a number of other commendations for the environmental successes of her company.
